"I was referring to Leo, but you are completely correct about your outfit," Eris remarked, the sliver of a snide comment creeping through although half of it was simply due to her matter of fact mannerisms, wearing away at her polite prose that was an act more than anything, an act she no longer had to keep up in present company.
Kara dipped into a small bow at Blitz's compliment, though she shook her head. "I'm not very good at it, compared to others. My commander always said I should practice more, but I was too busy pursuing other things." There it was again, her commander. Had they been one of the aliens lying dead on the floor of the base, or someone else entirely? She had referenced the other Khonqrien in the room with her, though his name escaped Leo, as merely being a protector, yet there was a strange lack of family in the equation, especially for one so young. Perhaps it was merely his imagination, however, or a difference in cultures. Who was to say her race even had a similar social structure to begin with, anyway? "Um, what was their name?" Distracted by his thoughts, Leo only caught bits and pieces of what Blitz had been saying, and Kara's question in response, yet still he surmised enough.
"Khix'eks," Leo offered, the fabric of his voice more akin to the sound the alien in question had originally produced, rather than the humanized version that was already floating around. Kara's eyes widened, nodding quickly in acknowledgement, though Eris was annoyed by the motion for a moment as she completed her work, the girl now looking a step closer to an elf although still it wasn't a perfect disguise.
"He's, um, he's a... I believe you word is agent? Except he's, um, higher up than other agents, and more well known," she said. "I don't really understand it that well, but his purpose was to do what he did. I... I don't really know anything else though." He was pretty sure that was to a degree a lie, but Leo cared little whether or not the Khonqrien were unified, such a prospect was the hopeless fantasy of all governments anyway. The girl had likely been fed propaganda that she knew better than to spread as truth, in reality, a convincing ploy to some but for those who sought out knowledge it was nothing more than a thin veil, though an often persistent one at that.
Blitz winced with a slight grin. "Ouch. I wasn't expecting applause for my self-reflection, but that doesn't mean you need to actually agree with me," he said with a laugh.
Kara, meanwhile, was gracefully accepting compliments on her 'new' appearance. "If I'm being honest, it would take some mighty explaining to pass you off as a human, but at the very least, the word 'alien' won't be the first thing that pops into their head, thanks to the misdirection from your transformation. Though the makeup does appear to be helping in that regard," he added, noting Eris' work to give her appropriate-looking eyebrows.
Kara seemed to also have some awareness of the leader of the incident at the Gala awhile back, Leo recalling the name the alien leader had given at the time - apparently he was some kind of big-shot in an organization within their species, though Kara didn't seem to know much more than that. "I don't know if your changing abilities would be classified as magic, but that guy could summon and attack with bladed weapons, and even reanimate his own fallen comrades to fight for him, which seemed fairly distasteful, but also smacked of the arcane. Am I correct in guessing that neither of those abilities are standard for Khonqrien?" Blitz asked. "I'm assuming no, but mostly because I want to be right, given the alternative. An army of soldiers who ALL have those powers would be....pesky." Blitz said after a moment.

She nodded. "He's an... agent for a reason," the girl answered, again struggling with the word. Maybe it was one of those situations similar to the famed Pergrandian Committee of Internal Affairs, although this seemed... different, somehow. Perhaps it had something to do with Blitz's question, after all, for she had expressed that magic was treated far differently in her culture than that of Earthland's.
"So Khix'eks and others like him are recruited to a special unit of sorts in your military?" Leo asked, in which Kara glanced over at him for a brief moment before looking down, forcing her head to obey the yes that formed upon her lips. There was a reluctance she possessed unlike before, she no longer feigned innocence on something she seemed to know more about than she let on, no this was more akin to fear. A fear of what, though, was it the unit itself or something more intangible, perhaps at first she had sought to be a member of it, or was it simply an aspect of the Khonqrien that she failed to explain? Her tone was off-putting, yet it was nothing unknown, even in the free Federation forces still worked under the shadow of bureaucracy, ensuring stability and an adherence to the status quo.
Checking the dashboard once more, Eris soon adjusted her grip on Blackjack's controls, even as she did so the ship plummeting from the speeds it had previously been traveling at to face a blue and white planet, checkered with deep rifts and cities that sprung up from them. "Home sweet home," she muttered, the tinge of sarcasm found on her voice although it was brushed away as she weaved through a variety of larger vessels crowding the space around Trillium, making it to the planet's atmosphere within a matter of moments that suggested she had done the same time and time again.
Kara didn't clarify further on the abilities themselves, but from the way she mentioned his status as an agent wasn't accidental, it implied either a learned magic or some deeper level of skills, perhaps both. "Well, at the very least, glad to know that if it comes to a fight, we don't have to worry about every Khonqrien being able to raise their own allies if things get bad." Blitz said. "Going up against an army that keeps getting back up is problematic at best."
Kara also confirmed Leo's suspicion, but with more....hesitation than Blitz's own inquiry, and it wasn't hard to see why. Blitz's questions alone could be seen as self-interest with advantages for combat, but Leo's was a more a question regarding information on the race as a whole, but in a specific sense. And about the one who attacked the gala, no less. Even Blitz's question had gotten a lukewarm response, but it seemed like she had to muster some kind of nerve just to nod her head to Leo. Her concerns about humans haven't disappeared, Blitz thought. Just because she temporarily trusts us doesn't mean that she's forgotten her initial orders to not get chummy with humanity. Must be quite the tightrope walk, Blitz thought, feeling some sympathy for the girl.
Blitz glanced through the front windshield as the ship's speed altered slightly, dropping out of FTL as they approached the planet Trillium, the blue-white sphere already huge from their proximity as they made their descent towards it. Blitz let out a small sigh. "Not gonna lie, I miss the green," Blitz said. "Plenty of nature on Trillium, but our previous planet had enough you might have been able to see it from space. Now it feels like I'm missing seeing it from here, even though I know it's blending in with the colors below. Trillium's got so much marble polish and night-life coats of paint that it feels less like nature is encouraged and more like it's hemmed in for visual entertainment."
"Didn't think you cared so much about the foliage, machine man," Shoop said from atop his head.
Blitz shrugged. "Trees make nice places to take naps in. High enough off the ground to avoid interruptions, and unlike the admittedly more comfortable couches and beds, rare that someone cares enough about the ownership of a tree to tell you to move."

"Ah, well, there's plenty of nature, just not the kind most people are accustomed to. Those stretches of rock and glimmering lights you see? They're Trillium's cities. The rest of the planet is sparsely inhabited, harsh winds and snow that can bury someone within a matter of hours." Despite the warning in his words there was a certain fondness in his voice, leaning toward the window as they descended. He caught glimpses of the familiar capital with its spiraled towers and flitting traffic, yet his attention was focused on the outcrops that rose up to meet the grandest skyscrapers, ice coating the upper echelons of the structures and spreading across the plains above the metropolis. Even as they dove into the urban chaos did Leo's mind dwell upon it, yet it was a different place, so near in spirit though it could not be further from his grasp. Home, the word swelled painfully in his throat even as he had not the slightest chance of echoing it, the wastes of Trillium were perhaps the closest he could ever get but it was not the same, it would never be the same. Oh what he would give to see the pristine flats one last time, it was a frightening thought, a dream that like all others of his had morphed into a nightmare.
They passed by the tower they most often visited in the city, its slick surface emblazoned with three large letters, quite predictably an I, an M, and a G. Once upon a time the title had belong to another building, far more inconspicuous as it waited for locals to pass through its doors, a large store with generic branding that had changed time and time again. And of course there was the capital building itself in the characteristic Fioran white, although they barely paid it a passing glance. Yet it was none of these locations nor the bars, clubs, and similar that they arrived at, rather it was at the landing pad of an apartment complex, properly disheveled to function as a place nobody would think twice about.
"Apartment number 501, correct?" Eris asked, in which he moved toward a shrug before nodding, recalling that she was indeed right, a surprise to him that he even remembered the digits in the first place. "Right, then, let's go see if she's around."
Blitz listened as Leo explained about the coloring of the planet below with a hint of fondness in his tone as he described the landscape. Normally Blitz - or at the very least, Shoop - would have found a way to amusingly bring that up, but for once, both kept quiet, not wanting to intrude on his memories of the place. Or whatever place he's comparing it to, Blitz thought with some realization. He probably doesn't stick around places long enough - from his perspective - to form lasting memories of the place, so unless he's been here awhile, this place might be similar to another. Goodness knows I feel more at peace in forests, even ones that aren't the ones I used to wander through.
Blitz glanced at the buildings as they passed in the ship. "Even if the IMG didn't have things set up here, I'd have guessed that they had a set-up here. Not exactly subtle, but I suppose it does give a sense of safety to people, having the mercenary symbol in a protective manner in the middle of the city."
They moved past it and landed on a landing pad near a somewhat run-down apartment complex, one that was noticeably less pristine than what they'd passed thus far. "I'm assuming the location is for the sake of privacy more than anything," Blitz said as they stepped out of the ship, "I admit that pulling right up to the giant building with 'IMG' on the side would be a little too obvious, but having a rundown place even this close to the building might be pushing it a bit. Though in fairness, most wouldn't think a meeting site would be this close, so I guess it works in a 'hiding in plain sight' sort of way..." Blitz mused aloud as they walked.
"Anyway, who are we supposed to be meeting with? Given what we're doing, I'm guessing it's someone you two are fairly familiar with."
Post by Reya Starlyght on Oct 14, 2019 16:15:22 GMT
"Ah, it isn't just that," Leo answered. "IMG isn't exactly a secretive corporation, although of course every business has its more illegitimate ties. That building is to the Intergalactic Mercenary Guild as the Eye is to the Magic Collective, though it is considerably more immobile."
"Which is why we have the Simulacrum," Eris added, in which he nodded in agreement.
Soon enough they exited the ship, a small walk across the landing platform to the sheltered stairwell being required. At such a modest height the buffering winds characteristic of the planet were far less obvious, amounting to little more than a chill for most and certainly nothing Leo noticed, although Kara with her hood pulled over her head seemed to shiver. "As if we'd take an outsider to a truly clandestine location," Eris responded to Blitz, despite her words her tone more neutral than anything. Still, she quickly blinked and added a short, "No offense." Leo let out a brief laugh, which was followed by a glare in his direction of equal length.
There was a short pause in their procession as Eris procured a card and swiped it across the keypad of the building, overriding the controls as a gold light flashed for a brief moment. With a click did the metal door unlock, and within a few moments were they inside, descending the creaking steel steps that truly told the age of the structure. Still, Blitz's query led Leo and Eris to pause mid-step, turning their heads back in unison although it was he who replied. "Yes, well, she's pretty cagey with her identity. She owns us a few favors, though, to say the least, not to mention she's a bit more... morally upright than most people who call themselves mercenaries." They emerged in a hallway that did little to contrast the dingy appearance thus far, maintaining the masquerade of nothingness. Still, upon the doors were hung a variety of numbers, and at the end of the corridor was the correct digit labelled, a swift knock delivered and thus did the waiting game begin.
"The Magic Council isn't exactly secretive, either," Blitz admitted, "What with a giant eye hanging in the cosmos. And while I think every company has some kind of secrets it would have a problem if someone outside it knew, this is the first time I've seen such a trigger-happy response to someone running off with said secrets." Blitz paused briefly, glancing at Kara. "Though I do get why this one in particular is one that needs to stay on a need-to-know basis."
Eris did clarify why they weren't going in the front door, though she did apologize for the brisk manner in which she replied. "None taken," Blitz said with a grin. "Though I'd appreciate it if you explained to your friends inside that I'm here to help - some view our companies as rivals of sorts, given that we occasionally take on similar jobs, so I'd rather not ruffle feathers - frankly, we don't have the luxury." Blitz said with a shrug and a smile.
Blitz's question gave them pause, however - apparently she didn't want to be well-known, but she had a debt to them of some kind, so she could be trusted with an issue of this nature. She also had good morals, apparently, though the way Leo phrased it, he made it sound like he wasn't a big fan of the idea, or at least, didn't think it was a good thing. "You say it like have good morals is a bad thing," Blitz said, stretching an arm over his head. "Sure, I can understand that you two are a little too used to eliminating your opposition in a....permanent fashion, but that doesn't mean giving them jail time instead of the executioner's blade is the worst idea."
Post by Reya Starlyght on Oct 21, 2019 0:07:21 GMT
Eris shook her head at his notion with a laugh. "I can assure you there are no such sentiments here; that tends to be a trend more so with less experienced members."
He blinked. "Oh, did I? Sorry about that... I-well, let's just say morality is at best subjective," Leo cleared his throat. "And really, it depends on what kind of jail you're talking about, but I rest my case." His voice was sunken, nearly monotone as if there was nothing to be concerned with yet so much all the same. Nevertheless, he pushed his thoughts away from truth he had come so close to striking, internally cursing at his carelessness but unable to rectify it without making things worse. At least the slow creaking of rusted hinges decided to speak, as a woman with dark brown hair and equally pitched eyes answered.
"What business do you have here today?" Amenable yet straight to the point as always, it was a relief that she didn't make any assumptions as she glanced between Blitz and Kara, her eyes at last falling on the girl. Leo mouthed a word in which she gave a swift nod, even as Eris truly responded.
"Kara here has offered cooperation to an extent in exchange for protection."
The woman raised an eyebrow in skepticism, though she returned to the room all the same, gesturing for them to follow. "To an extent? You two usually aren't that lenient," she commented.
Leo stepped inside the apartment suite, unsurprised by the change in scenery from outdated architecture to clean, dove hued walls framed with furniture of varying shades of blue and white. Most prominent was the large desk that greeted them, stacked with paperwork of different fonts and levels of classification. "Thanks, Secretary. Just going to scare the kid like that, very nice," he replied sarcastically - and while both Eris, and, to his surprise, Kara, laughed - the woman issued a cough, quickly addressing the group at large.
"Okay, one of you can tell me why she's here. And I assume you accompanied Eris and and Leonidas in this venture?" Her attention wandered to Blitz in her final phrase, looking him up and down again.
Thankfully, Eris clarified that it was only that was with newer members. "Glad to hear it." Blitz said, thinking In truth, very glad to hear it. I suspect Kara might not have been as willing to tag along with us had all her companions been unharmed when we arrived, as we would have no doubt had to fight, and if it had come to that.....yeesh. Diplomacy wouldn't have been on the table for very long.
Leo seemed surprised that Blitz pointed out his unintentional 'stance', but quickly brushed over it. They think I'm being silly when I point out that they leave an unusual amount of hints for something they want to keep under wraps, then when I notice something outright, they fidget like I caught them passing a note in class, Blitz thought with some amusement.
Before they could mention that minor slip, however, the door swung open, revealing a woman with dark brown hair and eyes quietly asking what they wanted. That was fast, Blitz thought. Even assuming she knows the two of them, she sees someone she's never met and Kara, and asks questions like nothing's amiss.
As they stepped inside the office, it was surprisingly close to a standard apartment, barring the alarming pile of paperwork sitting on a desk taking up a good chunk of the room. Leo explained as the door was shut behind them. Blitz said nothing when the others laughed at Leo's grumble. He wanted to point out that he hadn't exactly gotten a chance to, what with everyone already being defeated before they arrived, but he didn't think he needed to say that in front of Kara.
When the woman turned and posed a question to Blitz about him tagging along, he nodded. "One of the few that had anything close to 'experience' with this sort of thing as they did, so I got volunteered, but I didn't mind helping out," Blitz said with a shrug. "Given what I've seen so far, I'm guessing we don't need to explain why Kara seeking asylum is slightly more critical than most." he added.
