Yet another quiet flight for Laelynn and her A.I. companion, Laelynn continued to work tirelessly on her water generation system, soldering iron in hand and goggles adjusted tightly. Yet, with all good things, this silence was not meant to last.~ "Miss Morbane, may I have some of your time for a question?" Taking off her soldering goggles, Laelynn sighed, looking up to the cameras above with an annoyed look. "What is it *now* P.A.L?" "My studies of the etherweb have alerted me of this "Holiday Cheer" humans seem so fond of, what is it?" With this, the camera above zoomed in, attempting to read Laelynn's reaction, both biologically and psychologically.
In that moment, Laelynn signed, placing down her tools, giving a stern, solid glare to the cameras above. "It's a social construct created by humans for an outdated era P.A.L, let's just leave it at that." "But I am curious as to what the cause is and what it means..." "I *said* let's leave it at that!" For a moment, silence was the only sound, or lack thereof in the ship, before P.A.L bravely spoke up against their creator. "...According to vocal tone and biological signals...it seems this is an uncomfortable topic for you..."

"Gee, you have such a great sense of observation P.A.L..." With that, Laelynn shifted her seat to the side, folding here arms over her inventor bench and burying her head into her forearms, taking a deep, long breath. "You havn't been like this on other holidays, this brings me concern." "We've been over this P.A.L, you havn't had your empathy system installed yet..." "But it is my duty to ensure you are at one hundred percent efficiency." "Uggh, fine then. Tell ya' what P.A.L, grab me a melon soda from the fridge and I'll tell you all about this farcical excuse of a holiday..." "Confirmed." With that, the robotic hand anchored to the ship's ceiling slid along it's tracks to the kitchen area, promptly bringing back a metal, green colored can of melon soda, Laelynn's hands down favorite drink, whether it be for enhancing a good day, or softening the blow of a bad one.
"Here you are Miss Morbane, I did a thermal scan and confirmed your beverage is at the optimal temperature for enjoyment." "Thanks P.A.L..." Apathetically reaching out, not bothering to raise her head up, Laelynn grabbed the soda can as it was presented to her, taking a brief huff before raising herself back up in her seat. "So, Christmas, where to start..." Laelynn paused for a moment, popping off the top of the bottle and taking a sip, musing on how to best explain it to an A.I.
"Well, first off, no clue on it's origin, it's a really old holiday, but generally, it's a holiday about people that care for each other being together. Around this time of the galactic standard calendar, people string up christmas lights, buy christmas trees, they go round' caroling, and of course, spreading that ever so vile myth of Santa Claus, who's basically just a glorified, obese, reverse burglar." Ironically unaware that her father, many, many, maaany years ago actually once met Santa, (Or rather, received a gift from him directly) Laelynn went on to continue her spiel.
"And then, on Christmas Eve, family and friends gather around, placing wrapped mystery gifts for each other under the Christmas tree, and having a feast of festive meals like home baked ham, turkey and stuffing, mashed potatos and gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, pies, christmas pudding and eggnog. They laugh, they watch movies, they talk, and say how grateful they are for everyone they have in their life. Then, when the lights go off and everyone falls asleep, "Santa Claus" breaks into their houses, leaving more gifts under the Christmas tree, gifts for the good boys and girls, while bad ones get coal." Taking another, deeper sip of her soda, Laelynn's tirade broke for a moment, eyes widening as she looked at the metal bottle. "Huh, this really is chilled well, good work P.A.L.~" "Of course, I am programmed for excellence after all. Please go on...?" "Alright, where was I...?
"You were talking about the obese human known as...Santa Claus...?" "Ah, yes, right.~ So, then when everyone wakes up, they find Santa has taken the milk and cookies they left for him, open their presents, have another festive feast with each other and do other group activities, and that's about all there is to Christmas. Ya' get it now?~" "...I do not, all of these things seem like something humans would enjoy. Why do you dislike this...Christmas holiday?" With that, Laelynn raised an eyebrow, staring back up at the ship's camera, spreading her arms wide and into the air. "Take a wild fucking guess.~" Venom in her tone, and anger in her visage, Laelynn stared at P.A.L, daggers in her eyes.
"...You lack a Christmas tree and lights?" "No P.A.L. Look around. I ain't got any friends and my entire family is dead. What do I have to celebrate? Nothing! This holiday is as pointless to me as thorium is without a nuclear catalyst!" Crossing her arms over her chest, soda still in hand, Laelynn pouted in a childish manner, her previously raised voice going to a somber whimper. "I just want this holiday season to end, okay...?" After all, she prided herself as an intellectual, a scientist, and as a Morbane. She shouldn't let herself be dragged down by illogical, pointless, sentiment, yet, here she was, completely defeated and unable to escape the reality. She was alone.

"...What about, as you call them..."Uncle Leo" and "Auntie Eris?" Are they not part of your family?" "For one P.A.L, they arn't blood related, it ain't the same. Secondly, yeah, no. Imagine how pathetic an' humiliating that'd sound. "Oh, hey there.~ I'm a professional thief and one of the greatest minds of the century, but I'm also sad and lonely, can I spend Christmas with you please?~" I'd sound pathetic." Laelynn took another sip of her soda before looking back to the cameras on her ship, giving a dead on glare. "Rule number one of the streets, never show weakness, ever."
"Besides, they already helped me so much with gettin' me off my feet, got me a job with the I.M.G, even got me this ship. I don't want to burden them with my issues, especially for the holidays..." "...So, you think asking for help makes you lesser?" "Course it does!~ I've been alone for years now, I can handle things myself!~ ...Even if it's a bit lonely..." Muttering the last part under her breath, Laelynn pulled up the fleece blanket, attempting to comfort herself if even for a brief moment. Despite her brave and tough attitude, she did feel lonely, these feelings always repressed, but so much more exaggerated during the holidays. "...P.A.L...Could you make me some hot chocolate please...?" "Right away, Miss Morbane." As the robotic arm on her ship's roof raced off, Laelynn was alone with her thoughts, and memories long suppressed now bubbling to the surface as she wrapped the blanket over her head.
As P.A.L. went off to make the hot chocolate, Laelynn took a deep sign, pushing her invention aside and blanket still tightly wrapped around her shoulders, she grabbed a nearby remote, pressing a button that shifted the format of her piloting area, revealing a large hidden screen and her portable inventor's chair being replaced by a large, comfortable couch. After the surge of emotions that occurred, her only thought was on taking time to recover and recharge her batteries. "I'm going to watch some T.V. P.A.L, join me, or don't. I really don't care at this point..."
"Understood. Hot chocolate will be ready within two minutes, Miss Morbane..." "Alright..." With another flick of the remote, the screen went online before Laelynn loaded up her favorite streaming service, wrapping herself up in the fluffy cyan blanket she possessed similar to a burrito, nuzzling her head into her pillow and directing herself to the screen ahead of her. Yet, in her mind, it was pitiful behavior, she had such a great intellect, she was so capable she could escape an entire planet's authorities for years as a child, she had a rich uncle and aunt that supported her, but yet...it all felt hollow, and for everything she had, she felt nothing. As the old saying went...it's a lonely place at the top.
As Laelynn eventually set up her streaming service, she impatiently tapped the side of her blankets, waiting for P.A.L. to deliver her beverage, though eventually succeeding in their goal. "Here you are, Miss Morbane. Hot Chocolate to the perfect temperature, I took the liberty of adding extra marshmallows into the mix, I hope you enjoy it." "Thaaanks P.A.L..." Tiredly reaching out from her blankets, Laelynn took the cup out from P.A.L's arm, pulling herself up-right just to flick on a movie before settling back down, lying on her side with a mug of steaming hot cocoa between her hands.
"Miss Morbane, I wish to watch with you..." "Then sure, go ahead, I said I don't care, just don't be givin' me as many questions as you usually do, okay...?" "Understood." At that, the night silently went on through the dead of space as Laelynn sipped on her cocoa, slowly falling into the stupor of sleep after many episodes, gently breathing in her state if stupor in an ever so childish and innocent fashion, even if her criminal record proved otherwise...

As Laelynn slumbered, P.A.L. continued his studies into the phenomenon known as Christmas, primarily through watching the still playing television shows, while cross referencing the data with ethernet research. P.A.L themselves did not know entirely what compelled them, but now fully aware of their creator's plight, they kept researching further and further, even sneaking christmas special's into the live stream to aid their collection of data. And after a long night, silently drifting through the stars, P.A.L internally spoke to themselves, outside of the ship's speakers, with a single, and final conclusion. "This level of holiday cheer is...unacceptable." And so, with a flurry of lights across the ship, P.A.L put into action their nefarious scheme, whatever that may be, to take the "most logical action."
-Almost two weeks later at Christmas Eve...-
Working late into the night, as usual, Laelynn continued to work on her next invention, which if successful, would allow her pretty much infinite shower time should she be near a space cloud rich with hydrogen. While basic in principle, the application had become far more grueling that she anticipated, needing to sort out ways to filter hydrogen from the other chemicals and dust that may be within such a cloud, while also needing to then process said hydrogen in perfect sync with her ship's oxygen generator. Not an impossible task, especially for someone of her intellect, but it had certainly become a process. "Almost done, just a few more tweaks and I think I can put this inta' action..." Putting down her screwdriver, Laelynn looked up to the camera above, yet, there was a certain dullness in her eyes, and her tone lacked the normal, playful attitude she normally possessed. "Hey, P.A.L, any places still open ta' eat? Think all I got is mostly ramen."
"I believe there is a Pizza Castle franchise nearby, I can place an order and direct the ship to that location if you wish." "Do it then, I want a large, triple pepperoni pizza, am extra large, chicken, jalepeno, and bacon pizza, and eight ranch packets. Oh, also, the cinnamon bread stick thingies with icing sauce." "Understood. Placing the order now and adjusting trajectory. If I may ask, why order so much food at once?" "Because P.A.L, during Christmas, almost everything is pretty much closed. I thought you'd know that with all your research into humans." "I was not aware...fascinating..."
-Shortly afterwards...
Taking a bite of pepperoni pizza with her right hand, Laelynn tirelessly wrote down mathematical equations down with her left hand, switching to her keyboard to program the coding of her latest device, surprisingly unimpeded with the limitation of only a single hand, years of computer experience and multi-tasking having given her great dexterity. "Alright, a few more lines of code, and this thing should work..." Placing down her pizza slice upon one of the provided paper plates, Laelynn let out a big yawn, stretching her arms out in exhaustion. It took a lot longer than she thought but her H2O generator was finally going to come online, and with that, the limitations of her shower time would be a mere memory of the past. "...Miss Morbane, if I may ask another question..."
Sighing lightly, though stress easily discernable in her voice, Laelynn humored P.A.L, far too exhausted and burned out to even be annoyed at this point in the season. "Sure P.A.L, what is it...?" "I noted thirteen days back, as you spoke about this...Santa Claus, there was more that disbelief in your voice, your cortisol levels decreased, and arterial tension increased, which is common when humans are angered. Do you...hate, this Santa Claus?"

At this question, Laelynn's visage became uncharacteristically grim, a look of both anger but also of sorrow. Tilting her head down for a moment, she went silent, at a loss for words, before turning her eyes up to the ship's cameras, completely devoid of emotion, as if completely dead inside. "I'm going to tell you a story P.A.L, and I want you to listen well." "Understood, all power except for essential systems are now diverted to audio receivers and camera systems." With a deep breath, long repressed memories awoke, and Laelynn spoke not out of logic, but in a stern, annoyed, and rageful, yet quiet tone.
"Many, many years ago, there was once a young girl. She lived with her mother, who ran an antique shop, of sorts. She had no father, because their life was taken in a stupid war because they thought it was "cool" to be a hero. That young girl worked hard, she was home schooled, but got perfect grades, and always helped her mother with the shop. She was the epitome of someone on Santa's nice list. So, she thought she'd get what she wanted during Christmas time from good ol' "Saint" Nick, or as you know them, Santa." Taking a deep breath and another bite of pizza, she then continued, the emotional weight of the conversation coming into effect.
"That holiday season, her mother came down with a severe illness, her immune system wasn't acclimated to the timeline. While that young girl had been vaccinated early, and spent the majority of her life in the present, her mother hadn't, and her body became to deteriorate. They went to the best doctors they could afford, but they couldn't do anything, and that young girl and her mother didn't have the credits to see specialists who could help. Seeing her mother fading, that young, foolish girl put everything into one basket. She turned to Santa Claus. She asked only for three things. One, a medicine for her mother. Two, to meet her father for the first time, and have them round' for ma' on holidays, and three, she wanted ether cell batteries to experiment with."
