How luxurious it was to be sleeping in a house as big as Sunfall. As Manna stared at the ceiling he couldn't help but compare the large space to the small one-room house he'd grown up in. Not only did this place have running heat, but it also was apparently fully automated. The idea of staying inside something that almost alive was still sort of creepy to Manna. Could the house see everything he did? Could it feel him walking inside it? ....did it enjoy that sensation?
Shaking the thought from his head Manna rolled over, studying the small satchel of stuff he'd acquired for himself. sitting on the floor in the mostly empty guest room. The way the moon hit the skylight painted the whole place silver and Manna had grown accustomed to watching the ships enter and exit the atmosphere above him. He'd gone all the way to Chorus and found absolutely nothing useful. Just a red-tipped silver feather. It had lit up when it came into contact with his magic so he figured he should keep it, but he wasn't sure if it had anything to do with his mother. Maybe simply asking the mayor would have been a better approach. Still, he'd met some interesting people there and in hindsight, the rush of fighting for his life and freedom wasn't so bad. He suddenly understood the concept of adrenaline junkies. What happened in Chevllair had been more eventful than anything he'd ever done in the Commonwealth, but it still seemed like a pointless venture in the end.
All it made him realize was that if he wanted to find his mom, he'd need to get stronger. Leo had taken his magic to the face like nothing, and he got the feeling Eris could kill him if she was angry enough. He made it a habit to stay on her good side. Rolling over once again Manna forced his eyes shut, leaving the thoughts of asking Leo to train him for the morning. The last thing he wanted to dream about was that short bastard.
Luckily his dream started off far from Sunfall. On a planet, he'd never been too in fact, a place his mother called Earthland. Her journal held many accounts of her time on Earthland, how she survived a war and escaped, and what Manna dreamed of now was merely how he imagined it to be. The fauna was abundant and mythical creatures were everywhere. A majestic river flowed through the forest from a distant mountain, and magical sparks of energy seemed to just wisp in the air. Here Manna was not himself, but a little older, a little cooler, and a lot stronger. He liked to imagine himself in the place of his mother, going on adventures and uncovering mysteries. But he couldn't exactly run around in a skirt. Instead, he'd taken his attire from another. A man called Mago who had looked after his mother as a child. As such he was wearing a black leather jacket, its collar lined with fur, and a pair of blue jeans. A bolo tie hung from his neck, and an old fashioned cigarette burned in his mouth.
Manna took a look around, his mismatch eyes scanning the horizon for anything interesting to do. He was an adventurer after all, a powerful fire mage and gangster. Whatever he was about to do, it would definitely be super cool.
Yumi wasn't even exactly sure how she had ended up here. It was like she had been sleep walking for weeks or something. Having actually graduated from high school was a feat that surprised even her, though she had a feeling the only reason that she had been allowed to do so was to get her out of the school. Once you've summoned a giant astronaut bunny in front of your principal, they kind of want you out of their school. It's not like he had done anything either, but such is life she guessed. The short girl yawned softly into her hand and looked around. Guess it was time to find an actual bed to sleep on. She had been making do with park benches and back alley cardboard cots for a while now. With great beauty and riches comes great sorrow and defeat as well.
The girl found a nice hotel and walked inside looking like she had just stumbled off the streets, which, she kind of did. She was still wearing her high-school uniform, but it was now grimy and wrinkled beyond repair. Her long beautiful hair was now a tangled mess that she didn't even care to pull into her standard low ponytails. When she walked up to the counter, the receptionist immediately turned up her nose, thinking there was no way this homeless girl could afford a night in this luxurious hotel. However, Yumi simply yawned and put her money down on the marble surface, asking for one night's stay. The woman blinked and instantly turned red in the face, to which Yumi simply smirked at.
She was led to her room and thanked the bellhop for their assistance before walking in and taking a well needed shower before plopping onto the bed and drifting off to sleep before she could even get beneath the covers.
Once asleep, she found herself in the familiar setting that she had deemed the "dream stream". It was like a mystical tunnel that looked like the universe was swirling around her and, as she walked, doors would appear on her left and right to show that there were dreams she could walk into. The doors all looked different. Some were bright and joy could be felt radiating from them. These were happy dreams for sure, most likely a young person by the way they shimmered and seemed to dance as she walked past them. Others were dark and had chains around them, their ominous aura emanating strongly. They could be nightmares, or someone dealing with things they don't want anyone else to see. They were a lot of times her very favorite to enter.
Tonight she found a rather interesting looking door. It was swirling in colors of blue and green and the feeling that it exuded was one of adventure and searching for something. The girl grinned and walked into the portal, her appearance changing as she made her way into this new world. She looked down and saw that she was paler than normal, somehow thinner and smaller it seemed than before as well. She hummed as she saw white hair in her face and giggled. Who was this woman that her dreamer was thinking of? A white blouse covered an ample bosom and it was corseted as well. She gave a twirl and blinked. Short skirt, okay. The girl snapped her fingers and gave herself her signature black hair, gold and crimson eyes, but kept everything else.
As she scanned her surroundings, she took in all of the beauty and smiled, excited to see the person with such a vivid imagination. Yumi saw a man and grinned, knowing instantly that must be the protagonist of this world. She made her way to him quickly and bowed once she was in his presence. "Hello there!! You must be the person dreaming this gorgeous place!! My name is Yumi and I'm a dream walker!! Do you have an adventure awaiting you here!?" The girl had her eyes on full display, shimmering in exhilaration for what was to come.
Watching his reflection ripple across the surface of the water, Manna couldn't help but gawk at his new features. Playing with the new piercing in his ear the boy gave himself a satisfied nod before moving away from the water, standing tall and surveying his surroundings. It wasn't often he could manifest such a vivid dream, something about the world was almost too lifelike, but he wasn't about to complain. Might as well have some fun before he gets woken up for errands. The only trouble was, no matter how hard he tried, Manna couldn't decide what to do with his power. There were no obvious threats or challenges, and simply burning down the forest would likely only amuse him in the short term. He needed a quest fitting of an adventurer.
Stepping back from the edge of the water Manna shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket, making his way deeper into the forest. The woodland grew thicker as he walked, but never to the point of impeding his route. The path he walked was a mixture of pebbles and dirt, a trail leading to unknown possibilities. It didn't take long for the first event to unveil itself. Bracing himself to confront what would surely be a monster hiding behind the bush, Manna raised his guard. The shuffling in the brush was getting closer, and just as he was prepared to launch the first attack, a short black hair girl appeared in front of him. What the hell?
Clearly caught off guard by the girl's sudden arrival Manna was at a loss for words. As she introduced herself as Yumi, Manna found himself fixated on her eyes. They were almost exactly like his. Confused the boy stumbled back, shrinking a few inches as he took on a more true to life appearance. All that remained were the clothes and the piercings. She called herself a dream walker... whatever that meant. Unsure Manna didn't give her a response, instead choosing to squat down and get a better look at the girl's face. They were definitely close in age despite the drastic difference in height, but Manna couldn't pull his mind away from her nearly identical gaze. "Hey..." He brought his right hand to rest atop her head, his eyes drifting apart from hers and to her outfit. "Why're you wearin' my mom's clothes?" Raising an eyebrow at her the boy's hand slid from atop her head. "And quit copyin' my eye color! It's creepy." He said attempting to flick the shorter girl directly in the middle of her forehead.
Standing up Manna looked down at the girl, curious to see what she'd do next. It wasn't the first time he'd gotten sidetracked dreaming about a cute girl, but never one dressed like his mother..... Was he really that perverted? Shaking the thought aside Manna refused to accept it, deciding instead to change the girl's outfit himself. It was his dream, so theoretically he should be able to dress her however he please right? Thinking about it for a moment Manna decided he'd give her a nurse uniform, and focussed intently on trying to manifest her outfit. After several moments of intense starring, nothing happened. Frustrated Manna tried again, his brow visibly straining as he tried and failed to objectify the young lady. Closing his eyes for a moment, he opened them up again seeing that he'd succeeded in his mission. Nice.
Internally patting himself on the back for such brilliant decision making Manna gave the girl a once over in her new outfit. "Much better." He commented with a lewd expression. "But why're your eyes still like mine?"

For all intents and purposes, it had been a peaceful day, only disrupted by the racket Manna had stirred. That was nevertheless nothing to be concerned with, if anything the boy's return had been a welcome change from the monotony of the day to day, a reminder that not everything was doom and gloom despite that which laid heavily on his conscience. What a peculiar thing it was, really, he often scoffed at the concept yet when he came face to face with his own actions, well Leo was a bit of a hypocrite. Not most of the time, he supposed, but recently there had been a paradigm shift, the wheels of something he could not stop set in motion much to his own dread. To fight it was to drown in the darkness, a riptide he was caught in, but to swim with the current was death as well, the awaiting beach nothing more than shale.
Now was not the time for such rumination, however, sleep would be nice. Then, another distraction, perhaps giving Manna a few pointers on life before he inevitably took off again, perhaps shopping for yet another knife that he was never in a thousand years going to use, who knew what the new day would bring. Each new sunrise was a new adventure, was it not? Leo groaned externally at the thought, muffled by the rumble of Eris's snores. Optimism was... difficult, to say the least, it would be better to stop thinking about it all before he ended up punching himself unconscious. Before dawn could arise, however, another obstacle as always presented itself, it was inevitable.
He didn't have to give the terrain a second glance to know where he was. Twisted husks of trees, sap oozing purples and greens in its sickly perversion of life, the grotesque landscape was corrupted in a way that immediately screamed the truth, the horrific details of his past brought to light. Footprints were cemented in the mud, evidence he failed to erase, rewrite, as dooming as the wisps of smoke that trailed overhead. Their point of origin was all too present in his mind, almost sweeping him forward into that moment, almost bringing a cascade of monumental force down upon him. In that crux, Leo ran, just as he had that night, as he always had. He could not be dragged back into history, would not, knew that no matter what he had done nothing would have changed, the outcome would have remained the same. Still, without fail he tried, over and over again, only to see the world crumble beneath his fingertips, so close yet so far.
Leo walked toward the unseen facility, toward what had once been his destiny. Fate had already been sealed, yes, but he could not live with himself if he surrendered again, in the end it was all that remained.
As the boy seemed to take a moment to process the girl in front of him, Yumi picked a few small leaves and twigs from her hair and outfit that she had collected on her way to him. She looked back up into the strikingly similar eyes and blinked. That was new. Never had she met someone with eyes like hers. They were absolutely stunning on him. Just as she was about to open her mouth and speak again, he tumbled backward and she giggled instead. Ah! That must be more what he looks like in real life! People tended to show their true selves when confronted with the unknown entity that was walking into their dreams. He was still so tall though! But his face looked much younger now. Maybe even a little younger than her, though not by much if that was the case.
The girl was pulled out of her own thoughts when she felt his hand atop her head and she blushed lightly, staring up into those identical eyes as he spoke to her for the first time. So it was his mother that the dream had transformed her into? Interesting. She must have a big part of this atmosphere and his own psyche as well. As he told her to quit copying his eye color though, she pouted and furrowed her brows. She opened her mouth again but was met with a flick to the face that made her squeak and take a couple of steps back. She held her forehead for a moment and then removed her hands to reveal the bright red mark in the middle of her eyebrows.
"Was that really necessary? I'm not copying your eyes they just happen to be the same as mine! And I didn't know that this was your mother's clothing! It's just what the dream put on me when I walked in! I just thought it was a cute look so I kept it. If you want me to change I ca-..." As she was talking, she hadn't noticed that he seemed to be focusing on something else entirely until she was just about to finish her statement about changing and felt a breeze come up and wrapped her in leaves, before dispersing and leaving her in another outfit. Obviously one of his own creation.
Yumi blinked and blushed a little more, but just giggled, not getting upset at the change. It wasn't near the worst she had encountered before. She heard his voice and looked up at him, rolling her eyes. "I told you already. They just happen to be the same. Out of all the creatures in all the worlds, there's bound to be a few with the same eye color." She shrugged and then blinked again, looking towards the mountains as her eyes shimmered and her voice changed from playful and sweet to something a little more mysterious. "Interesting... It's rare that two dreams share the same space..." The dream walker didn't look back at Manna as she began walking towards the pull of a new dreamer. It felt dark and intriguing and she couldn't help herself from being curious. Steps in dreams were weird. What would normally take them hours to traverse would take them mere moments. They would arrive at their new destination swiftly.
The dream walker was definitely cute. It took him a second to get used to the difference in height, but now that he was actually looking he liked what he saw. Seeing her made him realize how long it'd been since he last saw a girl his age, much less spoke to one. He'd spent most of his time on Chorus with dudes, and sure Eris was hot but also terrifying and much older than him. She and Leo sometimes behaved more elderly than they liked to admit, but still, he'd managed to refrain from calling her Granny.
For now anyway.
Needless to say, he was happy to run into such a cute girl even if it was just a dream. After rolling her eyes at the question, she answered Manna's question quite simply. Could it really just have been a coincidence? Manna couldn't deny the girl had a point; even if he'd never met anybody with the exact same miscoloration as him, he supposed it was possible they existed. Deciding he didn't like that reasoning the boy shrugged and spat out his own explanation for it; "Maybe. Or maybe you're a Night Hag here to steal my identity." Thinking about it for a moment Manna continued; "Either way you should stop by more often if you're gonna be looking this fine! Unbutton a little bit of that uniform and I might even let you keep my-" The girl cut him off before he could finish the thought. Missing what she had said Manna raised a confused eyebrow as her attention shifted from him. "What?" By the time his lips formed the question she was already walking away, making a b line further up the path towards the ominous mountains in the distance.
"Where the fuck... Wait!" Hurrying after her Manna was on her heels in just a few steps, still struggling to keep pace as she marched on. "You haven't even given me my treatment yet!" He said clearly upset that this wasn't turning out to be the kind of dream he'd thought it was. "Come on at least show me your ti-" CRUNCH "Ugh?! What the fuck!" The sickening crunch of bone crumbling under boot caused Manna to audibly express his disgust, his face contorting accordingly as he pulled his foot from the skull of a dead animal. Thick black tar clung to the bottom of his shoe like slime, promoting the boy to quickly scrape it off in the dirt.
The landscape had changed as the two made it further up the path, something Manna had missed in his thirsty stares at Yumi's backside. What was once lush and lively woodland had quickly morphed into gloomy swampland. A dreary fog hung close to the earth, filling the area with the putrid stench of sulfur. The trees were morphed into grotesque shapes and for the most part dead, long dead from the looks of it. When the wind came the whole swamp began to creak and moan in a hair raising orchestra of barren branches threatening to snap in the breeze. Even the birds had gone quiet; their songs replaced with a telling silence. Where deer once pranced through the brush, their rotting corpses dotted the land, bubbling with black puss. Death hung in the air, chilling Manna straight to the bone. He'd never been here before and yet he felt something familiar about the landscape. "Holy shit..." He spoke wistfully, their surroundings continuing to devolve further as the boy tried to place the feelings of deja vu.
Suddenly flakes fell from the smoke-stained sky, elegantly gliding through the air until landing on the pair of dreamers below. Catching some in his outstretched hand Manna looked at Yumi, clearly confused. It was far too warm for snow. Smudging the small pile with his thumb Manna quickly realized the flakes were something else entirely. "...Ash." The deja vu intensified much to Manna's dismay, causing the anxious pit in his stomach to grow. "Hey Shrimpy I think we should go back." He reached out to grab her arm, dread piling on with every passing moment. "Death and destruction really isn't getting it done for me y'know? Can't we just find a hospital bed or somethin'."

In the distance there was the faintest of echoes, a human voice carried by the stagnant wind, rising above the rest of the calamity. Leo knew it was nothing more than a hallucination of his own mind, an inaccuracy portrayed during his restless hours. After all, something always changed. The abhorrent insects, maybe they were different in form, the roster of others constantly shifting around, there was always something new. Sometimes, his viewpoint was flipped: a prisoner subjected to experiments, locked in a cage; a Boscan operative, doomed to die by Krauser's hands; yet the goal in mind was always clear. Stop the missiles. Eliminate Wesker. Yet the sound that carried was opposing the direction of the facility, drawing him away from the memory and into something that was more than one, an alteration of the truth that had perhaps been simultaneous, an area of the past he had never before traversed. Yes, the woods that lay beyond what he recalled were perhaps a figment of his imagination, but they repeated the same patterns of desolation, the stench of death all-encompassing.
The noise drew him away from his purpose, into some twilight realm betwixt nightmare and reality. Leo was aware of his turn in direction, pausing for a moment before continuing onward again. That was impossible, no, irregular. He usually had no control over his dreams, the one exception was when someone happened to be interfering with them, either that or it was no dream at all. Soon, however, the murmured murk was cut through with striking clarity, as he distinguished life from the nothingness. One familiar, the other not so, at least he no longer had to worry that he was making it all up after all.
A shock of red hair only affirmed his recognition, Manna's presence far contrasting the dreary atmosphere around him. The other individual, however, well to say she looked out of place was an understatement. As Leo pushed past a blighted tree branch into the clearing, he let out a sigh, shaking his head. "You couldn't just let me sleep in peace, could you?" he began, directing most of his attention toward the boy. Undoubtedly the girl was behind their chance meeting, the trace of magic exuded from her being, not to mention, well, he had never seen her before in his life. Given the nature of her nurse's costume and the fact that she had already been traveling with Manna, though, Leo couldn't help but pity her. "Please don't tell me he put you in that outfit."
A teenage boy's shenanigans aside, this was quite possibly the worse backdrop for a get-together, even if it were only within a nightmare. No, while physical danger was tantamount to none, the truth was that he did not want Manna to make the connection to whatever he knew of Anna, could not bear to tell him what lay beneath the search for his mother. One thing would only lead to another, after all, in his own mind. Luckily, for the moment they were cut off from any further conversation, the shuffling of feet emerging from beyond the bloated forest. Leo groaned, turning to face the aberrations approaching, human vestiges long since twisted into monsters of mindless intent. "Welcome to Earthland."
The boy was definitely speaking words of a teenager as the dream walker got lost in the pull of the unknown. The transformation of the land they were walking on did not go unnoticed by the girl as they continued towards the presence that drew her towards it. The worst of it all to her was the stench that seeped through every pore in her being. Whoever was dreaming this really understood exactly how bodies broke down and the sickening aroma that emanated from them as they decomposed. Just as she thought she would throw up, she heard the boy behind her step into something and turned around to see his foot stuck inside a skull. This was definitely going on her list of top ten most hellish nightmares she had been in.
And that just made her want to keep going even more.
The ash barely made her pause as she turned to continue on their path when she felt the hand reach to her and grip her arm. If she wasn't mistaken, she could've sworn that the hand that touched her was shivering. She blinked and looked up at him, her eyes glowing with excitement and fear. "No one's stopping you from leaving this area. It's not actually your dream anymore. Not alone, anyway. I want to see who else is controlling this environment." The girl looked back towards the path and licked her lips with a slight grin. She thought to herself, they don't have full control here. It's a memory dream. They feel different. Though this one feels a little mixed, like it's an old but vivid place for them... Who was it that was behind this dream? She wanted to know so badly she tore away from Manna's grip to run to find out.
Turns out that wasn't necessary though. Dreams had a way of being even more perfectly timed than reality. A man walked out of the brush and immediately addressed Manna, which made Yumi smirk. They knew each other. That's why these dreams were in the same space. They were dreaming of the same area, just in two very different states. A shiver of adrenaline ran up her spine as she thought about it. However, her thoughts were cut short when she was spoken to and blinked, coming out of her daydream to look down at herself, remembering just now that she was still dressed up as a nurse. "Oh yeah! He did. To be fair though when I entered his dream the door put me in his mother's clothes so I don't blame him for changing it... and since he's one of the controllers I can't change back." She giggled and shrugged, not thinking much of it. Luckily she had spaced out during his comments of her body.
Any more conversation was cut short by the sounds of approaching creatures. When they came face to face with them, Yumi went wide-eyed and gulped, taking a few steps back away from the grotesque figures. A welcome came from the new man and she just nodded slowly. "I'm not much of a fighter... especially not in dreams. They're not my own. I don't have control here." Her tone was nervous as she bit her lip, wondering what good she would be here. Her summons didn't usually listen to her here. They had better things to do and although she didn't need consent to enter, they did.
Fear was a tricky thing. It was supposed to be a survival instinct and yet, more often than not, it was impossible for Manna to obey. The perceived cowardice clashed with his masculinity, and so a misplaced pride caused him to remain present in support of the girl. Still, the boy spared a fleeting glance with the path behind them. Any remnants of the luscious green forest had been overtaken by an ashen palette. Even if he had run away there was no guarantee he'd ever reach those woods again.
With a huff, Manna shoved his hands back into his pockets. Watching as she rushed further up the path Manna grumbled some steps behind her; "Whatever that means..." Boots crunching the gravel under him, Manna began to follow the girls lead. While his compatriot ventured onward enthusiastically Manna lagged behind. Never falling too far behind, Manna walked alone for a moment pouting. While he wasn't against adventure dreams this one felt different. Most of the time he was slaying easily identifiable monsters or battling powerful mages, but here he got the sneaking suspicion that everything here was his enemy. It set him on edge in a way few things ever had.
The rustling of a branch drew Manna’s attention to a figure emerging from the brush. Flames instinctively exploded from the boy, coating him in a fiery aura of pink and red. His crimson right eye was already aglow with energy but the identity of the new comer was enough to dissuade Manna from using it. What the hell was Leo doing in a place like this? While somewhat relieved to see a familiar face he did not remain grateful for long; Manna’s realization that his chances of smashing the short chick were now officially zero only made Leo’s arrival a bitter moment.
”What?! Did I ruin your vacation to hell? Manna’s voice echoed through the brush. ”You got problems dude.” Looking around once again Manna shot Leo a pointed look. ”Like serious ones.” The blonde seemed uninterested in Manna’s attempt at therapy and had turned his attention to the girl in the nurse costume. As shameless as he was Leo’s astute observation was enough to bring a hint of red to his cheeks. How was he supposed to know they were sharing dreams now? Once again the girls words only served to further confuse Manna, but at least she’d made one thing clear. ”I thought it was a different kinda dream...” He mumbled while trying once again to change her outfit. Unlike last time he was able to get it fairly quickly, and so Yumi would find herself adorned in his mother’s clothing once again. It was still a little weird but the only other outfit Manna could think of was a swim suit and that, he decided, was worse.
The shuffling in the bushes drew Manna’s attention away from the conversation. The grotesque creatures that sprang forth were truly horrific, and Leo’s off hand comment about Earthland helped place his deja vu. His mother had written about the extinction and how she survived it. When he was younger she’d once told him that she disliked the snow, because it reminded her of bad times. After reading the journal he always figured she was referring to the steady drizzle of ash. Perhaps these were the monsters she spoke of, the corrupted corpses of her fellow soldiers.
That conversation would have to wait. Aiming his pointer finger like the barrier of a gun, Manna formed a small ball of fire just above the tip of his finger. ”Then don’t be so quick to rush ahead!” He scolded in response to Yumi as he let lose a shot at one of the monsters. The wisp of flame zipped across the opening, gaining speed as it began to simmer and rage. The shot collided directly with the forehead of the aberration, exploding on impact. The blast was disproportionate to the size of the bullet. It fully enveloped the monster, generating an explosion strong enough to rip up the earth below. A cloud of dust settled as Manna blew smoke from the tip of his finger.
He never shared the contents of his dreams to anyone, for a myriad of reasons. A large part of it was because people tended to have the same knee jerk reaction as Manna had, if they cared at all. Mindless sympathy grew old fast, and it wasn't like any new information was being presented, just the same comments as always. The other piece was because he really didn't like other people knowing so much about his past, the current representation of his memory perhaps being the worst offender. Leo gave the boy a halfhearted shrug, offering no words in response to his sentiment. A far greater reaction was in fact elicited by the girl's answer to his query, although it was directed toward Manna. "You can ask for her number after this is over," he remarked, shaking his head in disappointment.
As Leo turned about, his annoyance dissipated, replaced by a very real fear. He knew the aberrations were nothing more than figments of his own imagination, the presence of Manna and the girl all but confirmed it, but still he could not halt his instinctual reaction, trained by the countless lives he had seen consumed by the Blight, but more importantly by his inability to do anything about it. All of humanity had fought against it, but in the end their efforts had amounted to nothing. Survival, perhaps, but they had lost, had only managed to contain the threat by abandoning Earthland altogether. Thus, any battle fought in the facsimile of it was doomed from the beginning, from a logical approach. From a lesser standpoint, well, Leo was terrified of the inevitable.
One step back, then another. Each shuddered with the call to turn his back on the monstrosities entirely, but he forced himself to stare them in their devoid pits, ignoring the contorted flesh. It was neither that nor the noxious stench that truly off put him, after all, rather it was the twisted essence that exuded from each shape, a sickly inversion of life. His momentary falter quickly vanished as Manna advanced, however, charging fearlessly ahead as if there would be absolutely no consequence to any misstep. Of course, there truly wasn't one, it was nothing but a dream in the end. While Leo was having a difficult time processing such, evidently the others, especially the boy, were not. Flames far more powerful than he had ever seen Manna conjure had been sent in the direction of one of the abominations, searing it from the dream.
Perhaps Leo didn't have the mental capacity to simply will the terrors out of existence, but he did have something else. The corner of his mouth twitched upward, his foot mid-pace yet instead of backpedaling further he forced himself to move forward, a familiar weight drawn from his side. Glancing down, he was briefly surprised to see the blade of Calamitas as broken as ever, some strange mash-up of the past and present catching him off guard before he proceeded regardless, summoning forth the pitched edge. His gait accelerated to a sprint, shadows pooling at his feet. In an instant the nearest monstrosity's head had been lobbed off, its triangular shape flying in a direction toward the girl, although that had been completely unintentional.
Another then approached, its movements far more coordinated than the previous. Massive, grotesque claws protruded from its mangled forearms, implements it did not hesitate to swing at Leo. He side-stepped out of the way of its grasp, a singular razor catching the hem of his sweater though the injury was only a slight trickle of blood, soon to close. Before it could strike again, he plunged his sword deep into the monster's chest, breaking past the feeble guard it had attempted to defend itself with. His motion continued downward, however, bringing the husk to the revolting forest floor. From it did darkness rip outward, consuming much of the horde in its embrace. That was not enough; in that moment he wanted to tear it all to pieces. It was only a dream, though, and more importantly there were others watching.
