Name: Jacqueline Lo Rousseau
Nickname/Alias: Jak, Jakkie, J-Lo, Jacqueline Lo Moreau-Rousseau XIV
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Height: 5' 7" (170.1 cm)
Weight: 130 lbs (59 kg)
Race: Cambion (Boscan)
Organization: ISC
Rank: D [22 REP]
Orientation: A-Romantic
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Physical Description: Jak doesn't look like the rest of her family, and judging by how she speaks of their "accomplishments", this seems to be on purpose. While she cannot hide her pointed elfen ears or lilac-colored eyes, she is good at disguising other features which come along with her family line. Her skin, unnaturally red, as if suffering from a permanent sunburn, seems almost normal when contrasted with the deep garnet color her hair has been dyed. Her blackened, claw-like nails carefully manicured into something more akin to human. But looking at her, it would be hard to say that the minor strangeness of her appearance was anything more than a strange choice of polish and a poor choice in sunscreen. However, closer looks at Jak's forearms and ribs would reveal darker, mottled splotches similar to a lizard's markings.
Clothing: Jak tends to cover as much skin as possible, if for no other reason than to make her reddened skin less noticeable. Even in the unforgiving heat, Jak has been seen in pants, long sleeves and gloves. She claims this is due to her sensitive skin, suffering through the discomfort when she must. She is rarely seen outside of her armor in public, consisting of a chestplate, pauldrons, vambraces and poleyns over an charcoal-colored shirt and pants. A white, padded cloth tasset that matches her chestplate wraps around her waist, fitted with a belt with a holsters for weapons on each hip.
Accessories: Normally, Jak's sword is attached firmly to her hip with thick bands of tanned leather. Her pistol is attached to her lower back.
Picture:
Jak is the black sheep amongst her family: a long line of grifters, thieves and vagabonds. Unlike others of her line, Jak has a strong sense of justice. Not just the justice of the law, but a universal, karmic justice. Because of this, any misfortune in her life, she often attributes to her familial bonds causing negative energies to converge. She hopes that by staying true to her morals and virtue, she can overcome the ill-intentions of her family to live a life which she can be proud of, and escape the cycle of misfortune which has befallen so many Rousseau's before her.
True to this, Jak is often the first to volunteer to do what must be done. She has been known to put the safety of others before her own, and will try her best to make this land a safe place for all to call home. However, this does not always translate to results, as oftentimes, her impulsive, self-sacrificing nature can result in her being badly injured, and unable to provide further assistance.
Even though she dislikes the path her family has been set upon, she cannot bring herself to betray them, fully. And if she is put into a position where Jak must stand against them, even she does not know if her resolve will hold out. After all, even though she loathes their "line of work" she cannot help but love her family, who put each other before even the laws of the land. However, despite her turmoil regarding her twin devotions to duty and family, Jak can't help but be chipper, if for no other reason than she spent most of her childhood learning about the world from a floating rock, and the rest stuck in a room, waiting for something to happen. When that's your main interactions with the world, you tend to be pretty optimistic and interested in the new things you get to see every day as an ISC officer.
Jacqueline's parents, long before they were lovers, were partners in crime. Her father, Bertold Vanis Moreau-Rousseau, was a professional thief who specialized in high-value heists. Her mother, Jacqueline Lo Sinterra XIII, was his handler. Years of petty squabbles, dangerous heists and spirited celebrations one day led to a night of debauchery which resulted in a child. Though neither wished to be wed to the other, they still felt that their union was not a mistake, choosing to raise their daughter together.
Jak's upbringing was strange, to be sure. Her youth was spent in safe-houses and back-alley fences in almost equal measure, being taught to pick locks and pick pockets by Bertold's side of the family, and how to case a mark and plan a heist by her mother. Once she was considered "of age", she was sent to the same place that all Rousseau's eventually were sent: The Manor.
Legends said that Rousseau Manor had belonged to some ancestor of the Rousseau clan, a thousand years ago. But now, The Manor belonged to every Rousseau and Moreau, throughout the galaxy. But more than most, it belonged to Uncle Nox. Because while everyone was welcome in The Manor, only Nox was charged with looking over and protecting their ancestral home. Nox is a sardonic, spiteful and seedy sort, but every Rousseau trusts him with their lives. And likewise, he trusts them to bring honor to the Rousseau name, training new generations in the finer points of thievery, pick-pocketing, blackmail and forgery. And Jak was one of his favorite students, due to her shrewd and creative problem-solving.
But, none of this ever set well with Jak. Even though she had been brought up in a world of crime, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off... that what she was being taught wasn't right. Over the years, she learned a lot about her family legacy. They saw themselves as some of the greatest con-men, grifters and thieves in the galaxy. Though, it seemed that those who bore the Rousseau name were always met with a gruesome end, often due to their own greed.
She didn't know exactly when the idea popped into her head that the Rousseau's were cursed, but it is something Jak came to believe wholeheartedly. And that it was their selfish ways that made the curse manifest. She reasoned, then, that the only way to beat the curse was to be something better. Something she had always, in the back of her mind, wanted to be.
So, Jak ran away from home. Unlike her family who all dodged the Bundeswehr, Jak joined up of her own free will, though it became clear that, officially, Jak didn't even exist.
What followed was imprisonment. Fines. Community service. Punishment for things that she had no hand in, and further proof, in her mind, of the Rousseau curse attempting to make another person miserable. However, after years of being poked and prodded by the government, it was proven... Jacqueline Rousseau did exist. And while they did wipe her record upon instating her identity, Jak would be given no compensation for the time she had served, nor the fines she had paid. Instead, she was turned out on the street and left to her own devices.
A lesser Rousseau may have given up. But not Jak. Nox had taught her well, and he wouldn't abide by her calling it quits.
Immediately upon being released, Jak was back to the recruitment office, looking to serve her time in a different way. And serve, she did. For three years, Jak served in the Bundeswehr, though not once did she even draw her sword. In fact, it had quickly become clear that a weapon wasn't even necessary. Instead, Jak worked in a small outpost in the middle of nowhere, watching for trouble which never came. The food was terrible. The hours were gruesome. The pay was measly. But Jak wasn't discouraged. Even though there was no excitement, she had done something that no one in her family could claim spanning back ten generations: she earned an honest living.
Still, it was disheartening to know that, in the end, her service had ostensibly amounted to nothing. And so, Jak looked towards a new horizon. She knew that her tour of duty was over. However, she was acutely aware that there was no way to advance in the ranks from where she was. So, she withdrew from the Bundeswehr and instead began to pursue a new goal: joining the ISC in order to serve not just the people of her homeworld, but the entire galaxy, and make it a safer place for the common man.
Even now, she uses her family's connections and teachings to her advantage while dealing with petty crime. Sometimes, she even sees some of her distant relatives, causing (or facilitating) trouble throughout the land. She is wont to apprehend them, but is quick to scold them for their greed, often aggressively pushing them towards a less shady life.
Skills & Disciplines
Nose for Trouble - Jak knows her way around slums and back alleys, mostly due to her upbringing. This often leads her onto the path of unsavory characters and situations, as well as knowing how to deal with them.
Sword of (in)Justice - Jak learned how to fight from her father, a man of loose morals and unforgiving tactics. Due to this, she finds herself using every possible environmental advantage and dirty tactic she can, to win; even if it would could be construed as dishonorable or cruel. In her mind, this is the only way to fight against someone who, likewise, prefers to win, over having a code of honor.
Amateur Locksmith - While Jak might not be a master of the art, being trained in the art of picking locks was an essential to Nox's training. As such, Jak has the ability to pick many types of mechanical locks, using a small lockpick set she carries with her at all times.
Urban Ninja - While not being comfortable with rock climbing or even tree-climbing, Jak has gotten very good at clambering along rooftops, jumping over alleyways, and scaling walls, in a city setting. However, she is not able to do so with great speed, and as such, would not attempt this unless she had a few moments to plan her route, first.
